4 destinations to travel in autumn

I particularly like travel Autumn. I find that we don’t necessarily think about going on vacation during this season. We can be afraid of the weather, the rain, the cold, etc.

Already because there are a lot fewer people in autumn, especially in places that are particularly busy in summer. And also because there are territories that lend themselves very well to the autumn atmosphere. That’s why, this week, I’m going to tell you about four destinations that I particularly liked this season.

Idea #1: Enjoy Autumn in the Alpes de Haute Provence

I discovered the Alpes de Haute Provence department from a specific angle since I took a geological road trip there. This department notably hosts the Provence geopark.

A geopark is a territory labeled by UNESCO because it contains an exceptional geological heritage on an international scale, that is to say it has sites that are rarely found elsewhere in the world. It is a project which has made it possible to promote numerous geological sites by putting in place facilities and educational panels to encourage the arrival of visitors. We can even discover them in augmented reality or with 360-degree views. There are also many popular explanations about the formation of the Alps. In addition to this website, there is an application also called the geological adventure. Thanks to these tools, we were able to easily discover the territory.

Two unusual sites in Digne les Bains

Around Digne les Bains, there are two places that impressed us a lot. First of all, the Ammonite slab. When we arrive, we see a large dark and inclined wall. But when you get closer, more than 1,500 specimens of fossilized ammonites appear. The concentration and preservation of these fossils is truly impressive.

Still in Digne les Bains, you can visit the promenade museum. Yes, that’s his nickname. It’s quite curious but behind this name hides the Geopark Interpretation Center where an exhibition on geology, a contemporary art center and gardens are skillfully combined to better understand the link between man and this territory.

The highlight of the show is really the waterfall which tumbles down an immense truffle field made up of flowing water. The calcium bicarbonate which is deposited on the plants gradually transforms them into rock.

Impressive geological sites

Let’s go this time to see a geological curiosity that can be seen from afar. These are the penitents of the Mées, immense rocks 100 meters high which suddenly rise up from the plain. They are stuck to each other. They form like a wall at the foot of which a charming village is located. This is the result of a long deposition of sand and pebbles over time, gradually. The pebbles were cemented to each other.

You have also surely heard of the Verdon gorges. This site is very busy in the summer, which is why I suggest you go there in the fall, when the summer frenzy has passed. If you want to be even quieter, go to the lower gorges. As their name suggests, they are lower than their neighbors, but they are no less impressive. You can travel them by electric boat from Quinson and then end your day at the prehistory museum in the same town.

Also take a moment to cross the magnificent Ubaye valley and go hiking there. I would probably need an entire episode to tell you about it because I love this valley so much. In autumn, there are places where the first snows sublimate the flamboyant vegetation. It feels like we’re in fall and winter at the same time.

Another favorite in the Alpes de Haute Provence is the Eslangon velodrome. Behind this strange name lies a mountain whose folds form a gigantic velodrome. It’s very surprising because it looks like the mountain has been folded like plasticine. This process took millions of years. In autumn, the vegetation which covers this velodrome takes on golden and orange hues. It’s truly sublime and what’s more, it’s easily accessible after a short hike.

I could also have told you about the very beautiful town of Sisteron and other sites. To find out more, do not hesitate to read our article below.

For the second getaway, a complete change of scenery. I will take you on wooded walks from ponds to castles in the Sologne region. When it comes to autumn colors, you will be served because this region is largely wooded. To give you a rough idea, I would say that it is the territory which is bordered to the north by the Loire, between Blois and Sully sur Loire and to the south by the Cher.

Nice surprises in Blois

You can start your stay in Sologne via Blois. It is a pretty town located on the hillside, on the banks of the Loire. I was pleasantly surprised during my various visits. Already by its castle whose entrance has very pretty sculpted details and which continues to amaze us with its double revolution staircase and its numerous decorated lounges.
